Weigela Plant Care

Weigela (Weigela florida) belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family within the Weigela genus. Weigela is native to Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, northern and south-central China, Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East, the Korean Peninsula, and Kyushu in Japan, and it has been introduced to Bulgaria, Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, and Uzbekistan. Weigela is also known as Old-fashioned Weigela, French Mulberry.

Weigela displays an upright, spreading shrub growth habit, reaching up to 6 inches tall with a spread of approximately 8 inches. Weigela produces tubular flowers in shades of pink, red, or white.

Leaf size: approximately 4 inches.

Weigela florida requires watering every 7–10 days. Allow the top layer of soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot. Reduce watering frequency during winter when growth slows.

Weigela thrives in full sun to part shade light conditions. The optimal light range is 200–1000 lux. Avoid placing Weigela in direct, harsh sunlight for extended periods, as this can scorch the foliage.

Weigela florida grows best at temperatures between 0°F and 100°F. Weigela prefers humidity levels of 40–70%.

Rich, well-draining soil with compost or aged manure. Good drainage is essential for Weigela to prevent waterlogging, which leads to root rot and fungal issues.

Repot every 2-3 years in early spring. Choose a pot one size larger than the current container, and ensure it has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

Weigela can be propagated through softwood cuttings, hardwood cuttings.
